Saturday Edenbrooke Music hosted our annual Spring Recital. This is a casual recital where 25-30 of our guitar students are individually featured. Edenbrooke Music's student base is expanding and this recital also featured drums, bass guitar and vocals by Edenbrooke students.
Edenbrooke Music owner and guitar teacher, Marty Keith, introduced Nashville-area drum teacher Chad Coombs, and our "special music" was by Zeb Barron. Zeb is a guitar teacher in the Rutherford County area.
Edenbrooke Music would like to thank all of the students who participated in the recital, the parents, the Brentwood YMCA, Jason Salzer and Suzy Constantine.
Here are a few photos from the recital:

Marty's Guitar Teacher - Herb Chapman
Marty began taking guitar lessons at age 4 from Herb Chapman in Paducah, Kentucky. Herb is owner of Chapman Music. He has been teaching guitar for over 40 years and currently has more than 200 students come through his store every month. Herb's style of teaching is simple and effective: teach the student how play a song during the first lesson. Just two chords will get you started. This technique is what Marty uses to teach his students. Herb is the father of Grammy and Dove award winning artist Steven Curtis Chapman. If you want to learn more about Herb Chapman, you can visit his website: Chapman Music.
Mr. Chapman just opened his store Chapman Music in a new location in Paducah, Kentucky. The above picture of Herb Chapman and Marty Keith was taken over the weekend at the new store.

Guitar Teacher Marty Keith
Marty Keith began taking guitar lessons at the age of 4. He was the youngest student of his teacher, Herb Chapman. Herb is the father of GRAMMY and Dove Award winning artist Steven Curtis Chapman. Of course, Steve wasn't that Steve back then, but he and Marty both learned their art from the best.
After more than a decade of refining his skill, Marty took his guitar playing to the stage. From talent shows as a teen to touring with a band and as a solo artist, Marty stopped only for more music education. He studied music at Ozark Christian College and went on to lead worship at youth camps, conferences and churches.
Marty is still true to his calling and leads worship every Sunday morning at Bent Creek Community Church, but between Sundays Marty diligently teaches guitar to the next generation of musicians (and many of their parents, too!)
If you're interested in guitar lessons for yourself or your child, contact Marty at johnmartinkeith at hotmail.com. In-person lessons are best and are available in the Nashville/Brentwood/Franklin area of Tennessee. Marty does offer lessons via webcam to those out of the area.

A Message from a Guitar Student's Mom
"Do we not love the children our dear Lord has blessed us with? For this very reason I choose to home-school my children. I heard once that our children are like spiritual arrows that we are sending out and we get such a short time to see sure they are aimed steady, high and sure for the battle ahead, the spiritual battle that is.
"I personally have only one out of three children left at home. When it dawned on me that this child was interested in learning how to play a guitar, I was set to drive wherever and whenever to get this child there. What a "God thing" I thought when I found out that this wonderful young man, who fears the Lord, would drive to my home and teach my child for the exact same price to drive to Franklin. I immediately canceled the Franklin teacher and scheduled Marty at once to come to our home.
"Marty was able to fit us in his already busy schedule, and when he came, I could tell there were no worries. He conducts himself as professional as you could ask. He is always on time and ready and willing. And when I hear my precious little man and Marty playing music in a nearby room, I get a warm fuzzy and it doesn't matter if my little man becomes a famous musician. What matters is my little man is getting spiritually mentored and he doesn't even really know this. I don't know if Marty considers himself a mentor, but I certainly do!
"So while my son is learning guitar, I know the good Lord who answers every sweet prayer for my children has without a doubt brought Marty to us. You can't put a price on good spiritual influences for your child.
"Thank-You God for Marty, and thank-you Marty for doing Kingdom work with every child-family you touch. May the Lord bless you richly.
Dawn Elledge, RN, CM"

How do I know when my guitar needs new strings?
New guitar strings sound bright and loud, but the oil and sweat from your hands, along with air, can oxidize the strings. When the strings become discolored or sound dull, it's time to change them.
Marty says you can extend the life of your strings by washing your hands before you play guitar and by wiping the strings with a dry cloth after each practice. For maintaining a good sound, it's best to change your guitar strings ever couple of months, depending how much you play.
Marty uses D’Addario J16 acoustic guitar strings and recommends them for their great sound and durability.

If you're an iPhone user, check out the Guitar Toolkit app. Marty loves it because it has a great tuner, thousands of chords, shows you how to do multiple tunings and so much more. He says it's definitely worth the ten bucks.

Monotonous or Repetitive?
Practicing the same song repetitively each day for a week can seem monotonous for some students. When learning to play the guitar, repetition is how students develop the skills necessary to improve. Working on the same strumming pattern in a particular song over and over trains the hands and the mind.
So, if it feels monotonous playing the same song over and over as you’re learning to play guitar, just remember: repetition is the key to learning!

Ouch! My Fingers Hurt!
New students often complain about their fingers hurting when they practice. It's normal for the fingertips to be tender as they build callouses from holding down steel strings. Stick with it and in a couple of weeks 30-minutes of daily practice will be sounding sweet again!
